Dell recently announced the expansion of the Dell Asset Recovery Services in South Africa to help customers responsibly dispose of old IT equipment, which forms part of e-waste, and reduce their overall environmental footprint. The good news is that this service does not just apply to Dell computers. The project supports any laptop, desktop, server, peripheral or accessory brand.
What is E-waste?
Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices. The fast pace of technology advancements means that many IT devices are quickly becoming obsolete and, although still in working order, are tossed aside. This becomes an issue when buried in landfills.
Why is E-waste a Growing Concern?
According to UN Global E-waste Monitor 2020, E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world. Over 53m tons of e-waste were generated worldwide in 2019, and only 17% of this was recycled, with the rest being dumped or burned. In addition, electronics contain toxic materials which leach into the landfill and groundwater, posing serious environmental risks to the soil, water, air, and wildlife.
Disposing of obsolete IT equipment can be daunting in terms of not only the logistics but especially the risks associated with data security and environmental compliance. Fortunately, Dell’s Asset Recovery Service ensures that this process can be adhered to securely and responsibly to help reduce waste and protect human and ecological health. If the equipment is still worth something, you may even have some money in your pocket.
How Dell Technology’s Asset Recovery Service Works
Customers can return and manage any brand of owned or leased hardware to Dell, which will handle everything from the collection of the IT equipment to final reporting.
This process is managed online and allows you to request an appraisal, schedule the collection, track the status, monitor progress and manage payments.
Dell will advise you what your equipment is worth if it is not totally obsolete. It will be recycled according to all legal and regulatory guidelines if there is no value. The entire process will be documented.
How does Dell Manage Residual Data on Obsolete Equipment?
Aware that cyber theft is a significant risk, Dell Technologies prioritises the safety of your data through strict procedures and meticulous documentation to protect your assets and sensitive data from collection to destruction. All devices are sanitised strictly according to the NIST SP 800-88 r1 standard to ensure that residual data does not fall into the wrong hands. This process can be done at your offices or an offsite facility. Dell will provide you with a detailed status report regarding the data sanitisation, equipment disposal or recycling details.
