Software Piracy is growing in South Africa and slowly becoming a major problem. This is defined as the unauthorized copying or distribution of copyrighted software. It includes copying, downloading, sharing, selling/installing multiple copies onto personal or work computers.
What people don’t realize is that software piracy affects more than just industry revenues and that when you purchase software you are purchasing a license and not the actual software. We do not realize that copyright infringement could be crippling to the economy, for instance in 2008 industry losses due to software piracy in South Africa rose considerably. This kind of piracy negatively impacts software publishers, creates unfair competition for legitimate companies, damages brands through distribution of substandard products and exposes customers to a range of IT risks including security breaches and data loss.
Software piracy is on the rise mainly because of the cost of software, what with the state of the country, people are finding it simpler and cheaper to pirate things. What society doesn’t know is that reducing software piracy could generate hundreds of thousands of new jobs which will drive up economic growth, while increasing tax revenues to support local programs and services and this is beneficial to everyone because these benefits stay within the country. With more and better job opportunities, a stronger, more secure business environment, and greater economic contributions from the dynamic IT sector, reducing software piracy is one way for governments to deliver tangible benefits to local economies. It is of utmost importance right now that company’s do not skip corners and use unlicensed software because this will have detrimental effects for the business, consumers and local and global economy, never mind the penalties because this is an illegal practice.
Our partners have developed CenterPoint software which easily allows companies to keep up to date with their software and hardware assets.
